Tabletop Sweeteners
Used in permitted tabletop sweetener products and compatible sweetener systems.
Food Chemicals
A high-intensity sweetener used in carefully selected food and beverage formulations where its sweetness profile and processing characteristics are suitable.
Product Overview
Aspartame is the methyl ester of a dipeptide formed from aspartic acid and phenylalanine. It is used as a high-intensity sweetener and is approximately 200 times sweeter than table sugar, so relatively small quantities can provide the required sweetness.
It is not heat stable and can lose sweetness during prolonged or high-temperature processing. The formulation, process, storage conditions and destination-market rules should therefore be reviewed before use.
Aspartame contains phenylalanine. Finished-product labelling must meet the applicable requirements of the destination market, including any statement required for people with phenylketonuria (PKU).
Common Applications
Permitted food categories and maximum use levels vary by market and must be confirmed before formulation.
