Product Overview

A reactive raw material for polyurethane systems

Toluene Diisocyanate, commonly abbreviated as TDI, is an aromatic diisocyanate used to produce polyurethane materials. In flexible foam manufacturing, it reacts with a formulated polyol system to create the cellular polyurethane structure.

Commercial TDI is commonly supplied as a mixture of the 2,4- and 2,6-isomers. An 80/20 mixture is widely used, while other ratios are also available. The required isomer ratio, purity and technical limits must therefore be confirmed for each enquiry.

Trimline Zhejiang Jade Chemicals reviews the requested grade, application, quantity, documentation and destination before confirming the available product and commercial terms.

Typical Applications

A principal isocyanate for flexible polyurethane foam

The TDI grade and complete formulation must be selected for the intended production process and final performance requirements.

01

Flexible Slabstock Foam

Used with suitable polyol systems in the manufacture of conventional flexible polyurethane foam blocks.

02

Bedding & Furniture

Supports foam production for mattresses, upholstered furniture, cushions and related comfort products.

03

Transport Cushioning

Used in selected polyurethane foam systems for vehicle seating and other transport cushioning applications.

04

Other Polyurethane Products

Suitable grades are also used in polyurethane coatings, elastomers, adhesives and sealants.

Before You Order

Specify the grade and isomer ratio

TDI products are not automatically interchangeable. Isomer ratio and grade-specific quality limits affect formulation behaviour, processing and finished-product performance.

Share your approved specification or recent COA with the enquiry. Our team can then review the required material against the available documentation.

Discuss Your Requirement

Isomer Ratio

State the required commercial grade, such as TDI 80/20, where applicable.

Quality Limits

Confirm assay, acidity, hydrolysable chlorine, colour and other required test values.

Current Documents

Review the applicable TDS, SDS and lot-specific COA before production use.

Packaging & Delivery

State the quantity, destination and approved transport or packaging requirements.

Storage & Handling

TDI requires strict industrial exposure controls

TDI can seriously affect the respiratory system and can cause respiratory and skin sensitisation. Exposure may lead to irritation, breathing difficulty or occupational asthma. It should only be handled by trained personnel using controls specified in the current SDS and workplace risk assessment.

  • Use closed transfer and effective local exhaust ventilation appropriate to the process.
  • Prevent inhalation and all direct eye or skin contact using the protection specified by the supplier SDS.
  • Keep the original container tightly closed, dry and in the manufacturer-recommended storage conditions.
  • Prevent contact with water and incompatible chemicals; TDI reacts with water and can release carbon dioxide.
  • Maintain trained emergency response, eyewash and safety-shower provisions required for the site.

This page is commercial product information. It does not replace the product-specific SDS, regulatory requirements, professional industrial-hygiene advice or site emergency procedures.

Product Questions

Toluene Diisocyanate FAQs

Grade selection and safe handling should be reviewed before purchase and production use.

What is Toluene Diisocyanate used for?

TDI is used mainly in polyurethane production. A major application is flexible foam for mattresses, furniture, cushioning and selected transport uses.

What do 2,4-TDI and 2,6-TDI mean?

They are two positional isomers of Toluene Diisocyanate. Commercial TDI is commonly supplied as a controlled mixture of these isomers.

Is every commercial TDI grade the same?

No. Isomer ratio and quality limits can differ. The offered grade must be checked against the approved specification, TDS and COA.

Why must TDI be protected from moisture?

TDI reacts with water, producing polyurea and carbon dioxide. Moisture contamination can create pressure and processing hazards, so the supplier’s storage and handling instructions must be followed.

Which documents should be requested?

Request the current TDS and SDS together with a lot-specific COA for the exact grade being supplied.
